Body changes are a common problem for all pregnant women. Expecting mothers do face a lot of physical discomforts, especially when standing, sitting, walking or sleeping during pregnancy.

This is a time when you need to change your sleeping position. Undoubtedly, sleeping becomes a little uncomfortable because of the growing abdomen, breathing difficulties, frequent urination and back pain. So, here are some techniques to have a wonderful sleep when pregnant.

1Best Sleeping Position

Let us start with the position. The best sleeping position during the pregnancy is to sleep on your left.

This was a position advised by my gynecologist. It is advised to sleep on the left side because it helps to increase the volume of blood and nutrients that reach the placenta.

Before adopting this position, a doctor’s advice is highly requested. Sometimes, this depends upon the baby’s position.

2Do Not Sleep On Your Stomach Or Back

You need to be extra careful about sleeping during pregnancy. When you are pregnant, never sleep on the back or stomach. This is considered one of the very dangerous positions.

Also, this is not a very comfortable position and you won’t be able to stay in this position for long.

Do not sleep on the back because this will put all the weight of the uterus on the spine, results in undue pressure on the vein that carries blood from the heart to the fetus.

Sleeping on the stomach is certain in the first part of pregnancy, but it becomes dangerous when the pregnancy progresses.

3Use Cushions

With every stage of pregnancy, the choice of sleeping position is going to be a tough thing.

But, you can make it easy by using pregnancy cushion.

You can place a pillow between your knees.

Another cushion positioned to support your back will make sleeping during pregnancy even more comfortable.

Although you can use the pillows available at home, there are special pillows that are found in pregnant shops because they are more appropriate than a normal pillow.

4Wear Appropriate Clothing

Be very careful about the choice of your pregnancy clothes.

It is very important to feel comfortable when you sleep.

At any cost, you cannot afford any discomfort or irritation.

A good sleep during pregnancy is an assurance of baby’s good growth.

Therefore, wear clothes that leave your skin breathing and facilitates a wonderful sleep.

5Avoid Having Any Drink Two Hours Before You Sleep

There are some research papers claiming that one cup of hot milk can really help you with a wonderful sleep. But, my doctor advised me not to drink anything two hours before sleeping.

Although you need to hydrate yourself in general, especially during childbirth, yet you should try to reduce your water consumption before getting into bed, especially if you do not want to wake up often at night.

6Stop Worrying

I don’t need to explain this. A good sleep, especially during the pregnancy is very important. So, stop worrying about things and focus on the things that you are going to do!

7Meditation Techniques

Learn some relaxation and meditation techniques during the pregnancy. This will not only help you to maintain a good physical shape during pregnancy but will make you learn to relax and meditate.

But if this is not your cup of tea, then you can invent your own ways of relaxation and meditation.

Though I used to do meditation as well, side-by-side, I used to do few simple exercises like simple neck and shoulder movements. My doctor told me about these exercises.

I would suggest, do not do any kind of exercise without consulting your doctor. Also, please do not perform any such exercises before bedtime.

8The Evening Prayer

This may sound a little strange, but I had tried this and I know the difference. Prayer brings a state of relaxation.

Since childhood, I used to practice and I believe that prayer before sleeping will not only increase your psychic peace but also let you sleep better.

I can tell this with experience that if you pray in the evenings before sleeping during pregnancy, you are going to have a better sleep, pleasant dreams and much fewer nightmares.

In addition to this, a prayer plays an important spiritual role that cannot be supplemented by any other technique.

Try these techniques and I am sure you will have a wonderful sleep during the pregnancy. In case, you have any more tips, please share with our readers.
